The purpose of the Aiken Barnwell Genealogical Society is to further family history research in Aiken and Barnwell Counties.

The research area embraces all of the post-Revolutionary Winton County, later to become Barnwell County, including present-day Allendale County, Barnwell County, and part of Aiken County. It also includes those parts of Edgefield, Lexington, Orangeburg, and Barnwell Counties that were taken to form Aiken County in 1871.

The local membership combines the knowledge and experience of natives of the area and persons who came from elsewhere.

The society usually meets on the third Sunday of each month in Aiken (except June, July, and August). Meetings are open to the public.

Co-Operative Efforts:
Aiken Barnwell Genealogical Society supports and works with other organizations seeking to preserve history and genealogy in the area. Journals and other publications are exchanged with other such groups in South Carolina and other states.

Society volunteers help to maintain the genealogical collections in the Aiken County Public Library in Aiken. The Society regularly purchases genealogical books, journals, and records on film to donate to the library’s growing vertical file of family charts and other information.

The Society will publish your Aiken-Barnwell query in the quarterly journal. Email your query to the Journal Editor at aikenbarnwellgenealogy@gmail.com or send by regular mail to Aiken-Barnwell Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 415, Aiken, SC 29802. Include your mailing address in your email for members without email.

Publications:
A journal, “News and Journal,” is published quarterly and is a members’ publication. In addition, cemetery books and a library guide have been published. There are also selections of Family Histories donated by members. Visit the Publications page for a listing of publications available for purchase.
